What is the Wolverhampton Eye Care Scheme (WECS)?
The WECS programme in Wolverhampton has been running since September 2014 and offers improved eye care to patients with a Wolverhampton GP.
The three services in WECS are MECS (previously known as PEARS), which offers rapid assessment of people with recent onset eye problems; cataract referral; and IOPRM which enables improved assessment of eye pressure in an eye examination.
If you are concerned about your eyes or your sight, contact us or one of the practices on the participating practice list for further guidance or rapid assessment.

MECS
The Wolverhampton Minor Eye Conditions Service (MECS) provides assessment and treatment for people with recently occurring minor eye conditions. The service is provided by MECS accredited optometrists (also known as opticians) across Wolverhampton who have specialist knowledge, training and skills. Minor eye conditions that can be treated by the service include:
– Red eye or eyelids
– Dry eye, gritty and uncomfortable eyes
– Irritation and inflammation of the eye
– Significant recent sticky discharge from the eye or watery eye
– Recently occurring flashes and floaters
– Painful eye – Ingrowing eyelashes
– Recent and sudden loss of vision
– Foreign body in the eye
If you are concerned about your eyes or eyesight, or if you are unsure whether your symptoms can be assessed and treated by the service, please contact one of the participating optometry practices who will advise you.
NOTE: If you have an eye condition that is being regularly monitored by your optometrist or hospital eye service, this will not be covered by WECS; for example cataracts, diabetic retinopathy or glaucoma.
Who is the service for?
The service is for people registered with a Wolverhampton GP. It is for people of all ages – adults and children. Children under 16 years must be accompanied at their appointment by an adult.
How do I book an appointment with the service?
The service is provided by a number of MECS registered optometrists across Wolverhampton and some adjoining areas. You telephone an approved optometrist directly (self-refer) to make an appointment. On contacting the optometry practice, you will be asked some questions about your symptoms in order to assess how quickly you need to be seen by the service. Depending on your symptoms, you will be seen within 24 or 48 hours.
Appointments are available during normal working hours. Some optometry practices offer appointments at the weekend.
Please take your glasses and a list of your current medication with you to the appointment. The optometrist may put drops in your eyes to enlarge your pupils in order to get a better view inside your eyes. You should not drive until the effects of these drops have worn off, which may take a few hours.
What will happen at my appointment?
The optometrist will discuss your eye history and the symptoms you are experiencing. You will receive an eye assessment, advice and treatment appropriate to your symptoms. You may need a follow-up appointment, and if so, this will be booked at the end of your first appointment.
If your condition is more serious, the optometrist will book you an urgent appointment at a hospital eye clinic for care.
If you need a routine appointment with a hospital, the optometrist will refer you for this.
You may also be advised to make an appointment with your GP if you eye condition is related to your general health.
If I need to be see urgently, where will I be sent?
From Monday 8th July 2019, all patients with emergency and urgent eye conditions will be seen in the Eye Referral Unit at the Wolverhampton and Midlands Counties Eye Infirmary, giving patients access to a team of eye experts.
This service will operate between the hours of;
• 8.00am – 5pm Monday – Friday
• 8.00am – 4pm Saturday / Sunday
For emergency or urgent eye conditions outside of these hours, patients will be seen in the Emergency Department (ED).
Information or Communication Support Needs.
If you have specific information or communication support needs, please let the practice know in advance at the time of booking your appointment.

GERS
This is a primary care optometry service for patients who are suspected, by their optometrist or GP, of developing glaucoma.
What happens at a GERS appointment?
The optometrist will discuss your eye history, symptoms, risk factors and any medical history. You should take your spectacles and a list of your current medication to the appointment.
The optometrist will look at the front and back of your eye and perform several checks. To enable them to repeat the eye pressure check and look at the back of your eyes, they will put an eye drop in your eye to numb the surface of the eye and dilate your pupils. Other tests conducted will include a visual fields test.
What happens after the GERS test?
• You will be found to not have glaucoma, nor be at risk of developing glaucoma in the foreseeable future and be discharged back to the care of your own optometrist, or
• You will be found to have a diagnosis or suspicion of glaucoma and will be referred to the Hospital Eye Service for further assessment and management as appropriate.
How do I book a GERS appointment?
You will need to contact one of the optical practices listed at the top of the page as performing GERS to arrange an appointment for the Glaucoma Enhanced Referral Service. Alternatively your GP or usual optometrist may have referred you to one of the participating optometrists located close to your home, please ask whether they have done this.
They will offer you an appointment within 2 weeks
REMEMBER: you cannot drive yourself home from this appointment.
